Keep words in context

Learning 家 as “home” is one step. Practicing 我在家学习中文 also shows how to describe where an action happens.

Use a sentence to notice a pattern, then look for the same pattern in later lessons. Choose examples that are short enough to understand as a whole.

Use Pinyin to practice recall

Plain Pinyin gives you a way to rebuild a Chinese sentence with an ordinary keyboard. You can focus on remembering the words and their order while audio connects them to speech.

Leave tone marks out when typing, but keep listening for tones. See Pinyin examples and input tips.

Repeat with a purpose

1. Understand: read the meaning and use Watch if you need an explanation.
2. Recall: type the sentence in Guided and correct the difficult words.
3. Listen or speak: choose Dictation, Read-Along, or Speak for another kind of repetition.
4. Return: revisit useful material in Review.

If you already understand a sentence, begin with recall. If it is still confusing, spend more time on its meaning before adding speed.

Notice the Chinese word order

English and Chinese do not always put information in the same place. In the example below, notice where “at home” appears:

I study Chinese at home.
我 / 在家 / 学习 / 中文
I / at home / study / Chinese

This is one useful pattern, not a rule for every Chinese sentence. Follow the sentence you are studying and use Watch to understand its structure.

Connect sound, meaning, and memory

Listen before typing. After you finish, replay the sentence and check whether you can follow it without reading every word.

If you remember the meaning but not the sound, use Dictation. If you recognize the sound but struggle to say it, use Read-Along and Speak. Compare the five modes.

Try a five-minute routine

Use this as a starting point and adjust it to your pace:

Stop after a small, complete practice session. If a sentence needs more time, work on fewer sentences rather than rushing.

Choose a Beginner lesson. Watch each new sentence, then try it in Guided. Keep the hints you need and revisit a few difficult items after the lesson.

HSK study

Choose material near your current level. Practice a lesson, review missed content, and return to earlier sentences in Dictation. Use your broader HSK study materials alongside sentence practice.

Listening practice

Understand the sentence in Watch or Guided, then try Dictation. Replay at a comfortable speed and work toward recognizing the sentence without the meaning cue.

Speaking practice

Listen in Read-Along, repeat aloud, and use Speak for feedback. Pick one difficult part to improve on the next attempt.

For parents and teachers
